New transit-oriented development (TOD) standards passed on Wednesday, September 1st during the Indianapolis Metropolitan Development Commission meeting.  This will change the requirements for how developers operate around Marion County near bus rapid-transit lines.  The City-County Council voted 20-5 last month to adopt new development standards to emphasize density and mixed use districts.  The zoning will encourage dense development near the city's bus rapid transit lines and de-prioritize cars to encourage ridership.  It will create development avenues to benefit pedestrians and bicyclists and encourage mixed-use spaces to facilitate walkable neighborhoods.  The ordinance is scheduled to go into effect November 1, 2021.  Learn more by visiting:  MPO and IndyTOD

We would like to provide an update on how BOMA International is responding to the tragic condominium collapse in Surfside, Fla. After careful consideration, BOMA International decided to co-convene a building safety symposium this past Tuesday with the International Code Council and the National Institute of Building Sciences. The daylong event, “Ensuring the Safety of Existing Buildings,” was hosted in West Palm Beach, Fla., by the Building Officials Association of Florida.

While the situation in Surfside is unrelated to commercial real estate, we thought it was important that BOMA help lead this national conversation on building safety. I moderated a panel on “Property Management and the Real Estate Industry” that included BOMA Government Affairs Committee chair Mary Lantz of JLL and BOMA Fellow John Scott of Colliers.

The goal of the day was to establish a channel for the building safety community to develop information to help inform policy makers as they consider questions raised by the collapse of Champlain Towers South.  The event did not address the causation of the building collapse while investigations continue, but focused on broader questions related to maintenance, inspections, structural safety, and the application of current building codes and standards. Participants in this initial gathering represented a wide range of organizations, including experts from the code enforcement, building, construction, design and real estate communities.

This meeting covered a lot of ground in one day and is expected to lead to further discussions.  We’ll continue to keep you informed, and please let us know if you have questions or need any help with this issue.

    Ken

Thirty BOMA Members gave back to Frederick Douglas Park today!

This Indy Park gem is getting ready to celebrate 100 years.  Members painted benches and picnic tables, striped the parking lot and spread mulch.  It was a wonderful day to come together to network with fellow members while giving back.

FEB 14:  It's with profound sadness we announce the passing of a friend, a leader and long-time BOMA Member.  Christine Ernst passed away on Friday, February 14th after battling cancer.  Chris was a constant fixture in the BOMA community with her willingness to help make our association better.  If you have attended our trade show or golf outing, you no doubt have seen her work.  She spent tireless hours decorating our events to ensure our members had a great experience and she exceeded our expectations every single year.  A member since 1993, Chris won our member of the year numerous times, was a fantastic committee leader and a true professional.  Her family will continue the business she built, Trans-Plants, Inc.  The company designs, installs and maintains interior plants and Christmas decorations in commercial offices, public areas and residential locations.  They also design and assemble gift baskets for corporations and individual orders.  Chris will be dearly missed.
